FULL ITINERARY

Day 1:               Arrival Kigali/Volcanoes National Park

Morning arrival at the Kigali International Airport.

Meet and Greet Services by our representative, outside the Airport Arrivals section.

After a short briefing, embark on a morning sight-seeing tour of Kigali City. (Cost of city tour included)

The history of Rwanda dates back centuries, Kigali has been a part of it for 100 years. Founded in 1907 as a German settlement, Kigali did not become the capital until Rwanda’s independence in 1962 when it replaced the colonial seat of power in Butare.

Visit the Kandt museum, see old Kigali and the craft centres then visit the genocide memorial site. Learn about Rwanda’s history from pre-colonial times to the 1994 genocide; learn about other genocides in the world and how this country has dealt with that past. Tour more and see the new developments in Rwanda; the recovery has been incredible, a testament to humankind’s resilience.

At the end of the city tour, enjoy lunch at one of Kigali’s popular restaurants.

After lunch, depart and drive north-west of the country to the Ruhengeri area – at the foothills of the

Volcanoes Mountains. (2.5hrs). The Volcanoes National Park  lies in north-western Rwanda and borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga  Gorilla National Park in Uganda.The national park is known as a haven for the mountain gorilla and the golden monkey.

 It is also home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo), which are covered in rainforest and bamboo. The park was the base for the zoologist Dian Fossey.

Arrive in the late afternoon, for check-in at your lodge/hotel.

Overnight on Full-Board basis:

Day 2:               Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trek

Early breakfast at the hotel.

0630hrs:   After breakfast, your driver-guide will transfer you to the park headquarters for the Gorilla Trek registration and allocation of the particular gorilla family to visit.

Registration is a simple process where the park staff determines which group of gorillas you will visit. The park staff discusses your fitness level and advises you of the trekking times and conditions to the various groups based upon their location in the park the previous evening.

There are a total of 80 gorilla permits available each day with a maximum of eight trekkers visiting any one group.

Rwanda Gorilla Trek  Safari  1 Night 2 Days

0700 hrs: Briefing by your trackers, after which your driver-guide will further drive you to the trail-head (start-point) for the commencement of your amazing gorilla trekking adventure.

Your trek starts in the cultivated foothills of the Virunga’s offering stirring views in all directions.

 When it enters the national park, trekkers will be immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the colorful bird calls, chattering golden monkeys, littered with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive buffalo and elephant. Through gaps in the canopy, the magnificent peaks are glimpsed, among the highest in Africa yet easily accessible, beckon an ascent.

Weaving through overhanging vines, moss-covered hagenia trees and giant lobelias that thrive in the tropical climate, our experienced trackers, who have spent their entire lives in or close to this forest, soon bring us up close with one of the Gorilla families.

Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical one-hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting; raising their young.

Coming face to face with a giant silverback must truly be one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth!

After the trek, rejoin your driver-guide and transfer back to your hotel/lodge, for freshening-up and lunch.

After lunch, depart and drive down the scenic foothills of the volcanoes, on the smooth but winding road back

to Kigali. 2.5hrs

 Everything and everywhere, sheer green and hanging on the hills; Rwanda truly - land of a thousand fertile green hills.

Arrive Kigali in the late afternoon,  with onward transfer to the Kigali International Airport for your outbound flight

Time allowing, you have the opportunity to visit  the Caplaki Crafts Centre –for optional shopping of exquisite Rwandan souvenirs.

The Caplaki Crafts Centre is famous for its variety of local Rwandan Arts and Crafts, such as the Agaseke.

---- END OF OUR SERVICES ---

Important Tips

Ruhengeri area is located at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level.

It is extremely chilly in the early mornings and evenings - warm clothing is necessary.

While trekking, it can rain unexpectedly – it is necessary therefore to have:

Water-proof clothing (jacket, with hood + trousers, which can be worn over the regular clothing, and removed after the trek);

Water-proof Zip-Lock bags for Cameras/Film/Passports/Money, e.t.c.;

Hand Gloves (warm and water-proof), to keep hands off from rain and dripping vegetation; as well as

 protect from stinging nettles

Hiking boots - with good mud-grip are most appropriate (shoes/boots of  clothing material will certainly become wet and uncomfortable – unless one has left spare shoe wear in their bags, back at the lodge);

Gaiters – to protect your trek trouser legs and boots against mud/wetness;

Sun glasses not necessary during the trek;

Any valuables (carried on the person and not necessary during the trek), may be entrusted with your

driver-guide for safe-keeping for the duration of the trek.

5 Days Aberdare & Lake Elementaita

Thursday, 25 September 2014 00:00

5 DAYS ABERDARE & LAKE ELEMENTAITA SAFARI

An Aberdare Safari offers you something quite unique: with a mountain range running through the Aberdare’s you'll find moorland, ice-cold streams and thick forests. This mountainous area has been described as 'Scotland with Lions'.

DAY 1: NAIROBI – ABERDARES.

You will depart Nairobi at 0800hrs to cross the Kenyan Highlands, through pineapple and coffee plantations. You will pass through the industrial town of Thika and the intensely cultivated farms of the central Kenya. Arrive in time for lunch at Serena Mountain Lodge with observation lounges for bird watching and overnight floodlit game viewing over a glade waterhole and salt lick.

OVERNIGHT: Serena Mountain Lodge

DAY 2 ABERDARE/ LAKE ELEMENTAITA

Depart from Aberdare to Lake Elementaita with packed lunch. The waters here are often coloured sparkling flamingo pink, from thousands of the attractive birds lining its shores. Arrive late afternoon in time for a short rest followed by evening sundowners by the lake.

OVERNIGHT: Serena Lake Elementaita Lodge.

DAY 3: LAKE ELEMENTAITA TO MASAI MARA

Depart from Lake Elementaita after breakfast and drive south via Narok to the Mara reserve, you will have a game drive en route to the luxurious tented camp upon arrival in the Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch. The rest of the afternoons at leisure and in the early evening embark on a game drive to get a closer look at the Mara.

Masai Mara has incredible wide-open landscapes, and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife such as Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in great numbers.  It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably common.

The ultimate action here is without doubt the annual wildebeest exodus in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

OVERNIGHT:  Mara Serena Lodge

DAY 4: MASAI MARA

A very early morning game drive in the Masai Mara – the ideal time to see game as temperatures are cooler and hopefully lion, cheetah and leopard will be roaming the vast grasslands in search of prey. Return to the lodge for breakfast. The rest of the morning at leisure or partake in optional activities, a visit to Masai village to see their nomadic life this at extra cost.  After lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive to get a closer look at the Mara and to look out for the ' Big 5 '. Return to the lodge for dinner.

OVERNIGHT:  Mara Serena Lodge

 Optional Balloon Safari (additional cost)

A well worth it and recommended activity in the Masai Mara National Reserve is the balloon safari early in the morning; you will be woken and driven to the departure site. Once in the air, the view of the surrounding landscape, the rising of the sun between the mountains and the congregation of the animals at the river is beautiful. This all concludes with a champagne breakfast and memories of a lifetime.

DAY 5: MASAI MARA - NAIROBI
